A Living Beast

MYTH was built to create the joy and inspiration we feel when playing with hardware. Instead of “programming” sounds you create sounds by exploration and tweaking. The sound is rich and organic, and the entire system acts like one organism.

Re-synthesis

In classical synthesis, oscillator waves are mostly static and you add filters and modulators to "program" all the variations to make the sound organic and interesting. MYTH offers a paradigm shift: drag and drop audio and it will be re-synthesised as an IRIS. The inherent variations and richness of the sample can now be exploited with the TRANSFORMER dials. Of course - you can also add classical LFOs, envelopes or filters as much as you want. Just...you will rarely feel the need!

Look Mum, no Cables

Modular systems are so powerful, but also complex and easily confusing. MYTH has modules, but no cables: like in a pedal board the modules are simply chained from left to right. Insanely powerful and unbeatably simple!

Weird and Wonderful

You can use MYTH as a virtual analog subtractive synth, create shimmering metallics, add colourful acoustic resonances, create glittering grain clouds ... or do all at the same time. From fragrant pads to striking kicks - MYTH can do any sound with ease. And if you prefer to ride a wild horse: there are things like ORBIT, GLURP or ATARI PUNK - weird and wonderful new stuff.

The Fastest Workflow in the West

Let's be honest: sound design can be tedious, and we all love tweaking presets! MYTH goes one step further with a randomisation system on steroids: for example you can freeze sections to keep them unchanged. Or you "breed" new presets from a selection of parent presets. Or you take a sample and then browse through presets to put them over your sample like a dress. It's incredibly easy, fast and fun!

A Quick Crunchy Lament For The Closing Of Mutable Instruments

video upload by John L Rice

"A quick iPhone recording of this small 5U system that has some MI clones in it. Emilie’s brilliant designs will live on and we wish her well as she moves on to new ventures and adventures!

Mutable Instruments clones in this system:
Plaits by Chrutil
Plaits by Martin Jan Koehler
Peaks by Free State FX"

Also see Mutable Instruments Tribute Jam... from Cables For Clouds posted back in May when the news of Mutable Instruments shutting down was first mentioned. The Mutable Instruments website has recently been updated with the following:

"The production of all modules has halted and Mutable Instruments will permanently shut down in December 2022.

You can still contact us for support and repairs until June 2023."

Mutable Insturments just recently announced an update for Plaits. See Patchwerks recent demo here.

This is the 1947th post to get the Mutable Instruments lable.

Plants play Modular 🪴 w/ SYMBIOTIC

video upload by Andrea Marzilli

"I’m very happy to introduce you SYMBIOTIC :)

Made by the awesome guys and girls from @spad_electronics , this is a little but powerful utility that converts plants biodata in midi or cv signal! (It also functions as a midi to cv converter). It has a sensitivity knob that you can use to choose the amount of received signal and a setting button allows you to change some interesting stuff (threshold, MIDI channel, note scale and LED brightness). In this way, you just need some cables to easily jam with your plants by just connecting SYMBIOTIC to them!

So in this simple but effective patch, my gorgeous monstera is sending a mutating trigger through SYMBIOTIC to the @qubitelectronix Bloom, who is then sending its 'always-changing' sequence to the @mutableinstruments Plaits V/oct input.
Some lfos from Stages are modulating Data Bender.
Monsoon in Clouds mode is creating the right ambient for this biometric interaction. ✨🌱

Headphones as always. 🎧"

SYMBIOTIC is available on on eBay, Tindie, and Etsy.

Diy kits symbiotic biodata sonification midisprout

generate music and listen to your plants with our new symbiotc biodata sonification board, Just attach the electrodes to the leaves of your favorite plant or your skin or any living thing and the fluctuations of the galvanic conductance will produce MIDI/cv notes. sampling the pulse widths and identifying the fluctuations will generate control messages and MIDI notes. You can set the threshold, the scale, the midi channel and the brightness of the leds. you will only need a plant, a 9v battery and a synth (hardware or software) and you are ready to listen to them. if you buy the diy kit we send you the assembly pdf"

Mutable Instruments Tribute Jam...

video upload by Cables For Clouds

"Mutable Instruments was a game changer in eurorack. MI modules inspired many musicians such as myself in ways I never thought imaginable. Music i never thought Id make is because of mutable instruments.
Goodbye Mutable Instruments.
Thanks for helping me broaden my music capabilities.

Mutable Instruments Modules used in this video:
Mutable Instruments Rings
Mutable Instruments Plaits
Mutable Instruments Elements
Mutable Instruments Tides
Mutable Instruments Clouds
Mutable Instruments Braids"

Mutable Instruments' founder, Émilie Gillet, recently announced the following:

“I won’t design new modules and production is progressively stopping. Modules are marked as discontinued when the last shipment is sent to dealers. I can’t predict when it happens as it depends on how fast a batch is made, and how fast it gets sold. It might happen in a week, in a month or in a quarter. There is no easter egg, no plot twist, no teaser.”

See the dealers on the right for availability.

Droni di un futuro passato | Error Instruments Radio Sputnik UVB-76 | Soundmit Video [NO TALK] #02

video by SOUNDMIT

Googlish:

"We had for a few days in the studio this little gem of Error Instruments, a Drone generator with a part dedicated to patch cables, a micro-modular with very intriguing sounds and characteristics.

We combined it with a Grayscale Microcell (Mutable Instruments Clouds clone), a Jomox ModBase MK2 for the kick sound (we will see it in an upcoming review in detail) and the prototype (final finally) of Faselunare's Vega. All rhythms (except kick) are the work of Vega. All controlled by an always good Beatstep Pro. (There is also a MatrixMixer and a couple of delays)

While you watch and listen to the video (I recommend headphones or a generous bass system)."

This is what it sounds like when you control half your modular with Mutable Instruments Tides...

Cables For Clouds

"This is a leftover synth jam recorded on 09.22.2020
I sent Tides into 3 filters, Plaits, Rings, Elements and a delay.
I fed the reverb into a VCA/ envelope (which ends up sounding like a wall of white noise)

#Jamuary2021 | Day 02 | Patch - The Card Game

Cinematic Laboratory

"For this jam I used James Cigler's 'Patch - The Card Game' to make some patching decisions, but it's - mostly - a jam and the cards disrupted it :). But that's part of the game! You can find the game on patchtcg.com. It started with 'patch every cable you can' (fortunately I made a selection of cables because I have a lot of them) and making a video also required to make some decisions myself. At one point I had to patch all inputs of the Loquelic Iteritas Percido and it sounded terrible. So I had to cut it and start over. I wanted to 'manipulate' Clouds so I had to film until the dice rolled into a '6' without falling out of my closet. So 99% is real, 1% is creative editing :)."

John L Rice: MOTS At Lusio, A Night To Awaken

Published on Aug 31, 2019 John L Rice

"As per my usual, I didn't have any idea of what I was going to perform until the day before the performance, but for what it's worth, here it is! ;-) I had fun none the less and a big thank you to Mollie, Bradley, Chris, Philip, Justin, James, Kevin, everyone else who helped out, all the other great performers , and big hugs to the wonderful members of the audience!

If you want to know more about MOTS (Modular On The Spot) and Modular Nights shows, to either be part of the audience or to perform yourself, contact Modular Seattle:
https://www.modularseattle.com/

Learn more about Lusio here: https://www.lusiolight.com/

As per the MOTS tradition, I only used a modular synthesizer, you can get a good look at it at 2:35. I had three stereo patches on the modular, a sequenced background and then two different lead voices I controlled with an Arturia KeyStep keyboard and Mutable Instruments Yarns MIDI to CV/Gate module:

1) The background patch was the most complex, it was a four voice shift registered sequence featuring an Erica Synths Black Clock, a Division6 SQ816 sequencer, a VPME T43 precision adder, a Synth Tech E102 shift register, an Instruo Quad Performance Quantizer with micro keyboard, 4 Synth Tech E330 VCOs, a Modcan Quad LFO, a 2hp clock divider/multiplier, a Doepfer quad envelop generator, a Xaoc Devices stereo mixer, and a Strymon Engineering Magneto delay/reverb.

2) The rich fat typical synth voice was a Modcan Triple VCO into a Synth Tech E440 low pass filter along with an Erica Synths EG and VCA for voicing and an Audio Damage reverb module and then finally to a Circuit Abbey mixer.

3) The plucky voice was simply a Mutable Instruments Rings into Clouds and then to a second Circuit Abbey mixer. I had the patch set up in stereo where the output switched sides every time I played a note but unfortunately there was a problem with one of the cables so only every other note was heard! Whoopsie! ;-)"

Moog DFAM: Using as an Arpeggiator

Published on Jun 8, 2018 Kris Lennox

Don't miss part 2 below, for a more ambient take.

"Making a percussion synth a not-percussion synth.

Just for the hell of it. :)) It wasn't designed for this, but it can be interesting to push a synth to do what it's not meant/designed to do.

As can be seen, no patching. External reverb, nothing else.

Some pretty cool things can be done with this wee machine (I mean before any patching; utilising patching, it can get insane).

Contrary to popular belief, the DFAM doesn't have to be constant 4/4.
I'll maybe illustrate another time.

Best
Kris"

Moog DFAM as Arpeggiator (part 2)

Published on Jun 12, 2018 Kris Lennox

"Another look at the DFAM as an arpeggiator/sequencer.

The previous vid demonstrated the unit in its brutality as a percussion machine; this shows something quite different.

The track is one of my own, titled 'Through Pastel-Coloured Clouds'. I'm sure the imagery is obvious, given the 'noise as wind' effect.

The work is actually 4-part (DFAM, Matrixbrute x2, plus a viola. Yes, there's an actual acoustic instrument in there!!), but the DFAM arpeggiation sequence runs throughout.

Other instruments don't enter until c.1:55 - everything until then is DFAM-only (MB enters with bassline and upper 'shimmer sequencing' @ c.1:55. I filmed all parts so over the next few days I'll upload a performance vid of this work).

To the DFAM part: pre-tuned, of course. The output signal was split, with one part transposed up an octave. Reverb & chorus added to upper part (signal 1 was sent into a Lexicon PCM96 rackmount).

Signal 2 sent to reverb only (Eventide).

Lots of effects added to the viola solo (flange, chorus etc). Again, I'll upload the viola part on the vid showing all parts of this work.

The upper shimmer sequencing sounds more akin to FM synthesis than standard subtractive. Very happy with the sound. Great to see that the MB can be taken to these levels. Nothing added here aside from 'verb (and the MB onboard delay).

Bass sound is also fantastic. :)

The Moog part on its own sounds great. :)

The DFAM really is a versatile wee unit. Very happy with how this recording turned out. The sequence line wasn't originally intended for DFAM - but works beautifully on it.

PS I had to order some new short patch cables as my others have went walkabout. The ones I'm using I got from an ebay site called 'Scapesound'. Great cables. Recommended.

Enjoy
Best
Kris"

In Theory

Published on Aug 6, 2016 davidryle

"It should work...

I took a leap and bought quite a few new modules all at lone to try a rhythm experiment as well as a different direction in tonal work.

Noise Engineering's Numeric Repetitor, Confundo Funkitus, Tonnetz Sequent are in play here along with a Mutable Instruments Grids. Battle plan included trying straight pulse inputs for the clock timing from a 4MS QCD which is picking up a master timing off the Intellijel Metropolis RYK-M185 sequencer. They are playing nice with a suite of STG Soundlabs sequencer modules and Time Divider as well as a Moon Modular 554 Octal Divider to hammer out some pulse timings to the Tonnetz Sequent. A pair of Synthesizers.com Q962 sequential switches are further dividing up the various pulses to the Home and Transform functions on the Tonnetz Sequent.

The tonal chords from the TS is running a trio of Synthesizers.com Q106's sent through a Yusynth mixer to a Behringer CC300 Space Chorus and on to an Oakley Audio Discontinuity Wavefolder and then on through a Jurgen Haible Tau "Pipe" phaser and finally into a Modcan Dual Delay which is cv swept from a Makenoise Pressure Points and Brains. Whew! It was worth the 100 feet of cables though as it sounds similar to an old Leslie driven Hammond organ in places - like!

Mutable Instruments Rings starts the piece with a bit of resonant bleeps dampened to sound like wood blocks a few minutes into the production. A copy of the Metropolis sequence to a Harvestman Piston Honda is split up going to an Echophon, Phonogene, Clouds and Z-DSP for loads of background effects. It is also sent through a Behringer DD400 digital delay paneled into a 5U module before sent to a MOTM 440 discrete OTA low pass filter. This is also part of the opening sounds set. The last thing banging out a nasty bass tone is the Makenoise Mysteron.
Bass drum is a single Q106 vco through a Q109 ADSR. The snare sound is a TipTop SD808 and the clicky hat sound is an pair of Q106's in conjunction with a double resonant Q107 SVF filter in high pass mode and Q109 ADSR. The Q107 is also being modulated by a Sputnik West Coast Random Source FRV probability cv.

It worked for me."

PATCH NOTES

============
For the greater part of this past year, I had intended on growing my 6U 208hp system into a 12U 416hp system. I had been hearing about the forthcoming Elite Modular ‘conversion top’ that adds a top section to the 6U 208 case to make a 12U system. Therefore my modular selection was always done with the future expansion in mind. But now, inspired by an upcoming month of travel and flights, I’ve decided to stay with the 208 for a little while.

Braids - first hands on + Warp & OP-1 & Clouds

Published on Mar 11, 2016 Alba Ecstasy

"You can always see how user friendly it is a gear from the firt test you made. Braids - I saw a few top quality demos (DivKid) that made me buy it (friends says I'm a MI fanboy - very possible!) - but how does it sounds in reality beats any demo. In this video I just passed through almost all waveforms (video is ending at Noise - my camera stopped so I had to cut the audio) and added Warps as the 2nd sequenced oscillator and OP-1 kick for more flavour. Clouds comes with the reverb. Beatstep Pro is sequencing also Braids and Warps. I'll be back next days with a better camera angle and a more elaborate integration, of my dearest Braids, in my Eurorack. Ripples is in action too and A-148 S&H + A-118 Noise -Random Control, brings flowers to the mix!
ae www.albaecstasy.ro

PS: please try to ignore the glitches from beginning, it's such a mess these days with my cables..."

Update:

Braids - Ripples - Clouds

Published on Mar 13, 2016 Alba Ecstasy

"This is a continuation of the "Braids - first hands on" video. A better video angle, I also changed the position of the Beatstep Pro and it seems that the power source of the Eurorack is influencing it, making BSP unstable. Only one thing, I saw too late that I should cut a little bit the IN GAIN of Clouds - sorry for the "red" level on it.
My opinion on Braids: even it is digital and I heard so many opinions like "I'm out of here when I see digital modules in a modular synth", well, they're wrong. It is important what you do with a sound source, how you use it in your music, not what is it. Oliver of Mutable Instruments it's a pure genius. And I'm not the only one who say it. All his modules are great, no matter are analog or digital.
Braids it's amazing. Exactly what just I need it for my Berlin School sequences or for drones. Or for leads! Or monotimbral pads! Here it for yourself. Braids it's the star here, but you cannot exclude Ripples and Clouds.
